Buy a thoughtful gift this Valentines Day!
Category News
There is nothing worse than the cliche of getting a thoughtless gift; in fact, it rates below someone forgetting the occasion altogether, according to PCM Health Journal, as it displays a total lack of effort and imagination, which people found less attractive than absent-mindedness. Not the kind of message you want to be sending out on Valentine’s Day!
The fact is, we land up buying our loved ones boring presents out of desperation - everyone needs bubble bath, right? Chocolate is always good, and surely roses would go down a treat? In reality, you can buy these presents literally any other day of the year, and get a better response (and about five million brownie points for spoiling someone for no reason at all!). We don’t know what our partner would really want, we’re on a budget constraint, or we don’t acknowledge how important it is to them to get a little bit of effort.
But this year you can take your gift from predictable to perfect, in five easy steps.
Read them, and reap the benefits…
1. Diarise The Date
Make an entry in your calendar for the week before Valentine’s Day, so that you have time to make that special reservation before they are full, order a hard-to-find gift online (AND get it delivered before the rush), or spend time on that personalised homemade card without panic.
2. Don’t Ponder, Listen Up
If you are stuck thinking up something that the other person would really like, do some subtle questioning. Ask if they like something you see in a catalogue, or discuss other people’s plans to get a feeling for what your partner likes, hopes for, or may be expecting. If you are really stuck, why not ask their friends or family for some pointers?
3. Looks DO Matter
Presentation counts! By going to the extra effort to make sure your gift is beautifully wrapped, and giving over a candlelit dinner - or even over sundae’s at home in the pool - adds the excitement of receiving a special gift. And it doesn’t need to be traditional and dull - use several layers of wrapping paper with a note about why you love them between sheets, or use pages from an old second-hand book you both love.
4. Get Crafty
You don’t need to spend a lot of money - homemade gifts are not only unique but show the other person that you genuinely care by taking time to make something. A jar filled with little notes, either fun memories you share or a raffle of sexy things you want to do together, a packet of cookies, or even an old-fashioned mix CD of “your” songs are just a few ideas to get you started.
5. Make It Personal
The gift should really be about the person. Whether you have been paying attention to things that a longterm partner enjoys, or decide to play off of personal joke you share with a brand new one, it takes little effort once you realise how much you actually do know them. By using this information to choose something special instead of a generalised generic gift, you are guaranteed to make the apple of your eye shine.
Gifting is an opportunity to let a person know how much you appreciate and love them, and show how well you know them and care about what they care about. If you're buying for someone who seems to have everything, consider gifting an experience - book a massage, take them to a wine tasting event, or grab a couple of tickets to a concert or show. If you're buying for a co-parent, sending the kids off for an evening could be the best gift of all! Whatever you decide to do, remember - the true gift is the gift of love, and “love is the only thing that you get more of, the more you give away”... but buy a present anyway!
