Camellia (Camellia Sasanqua)

Category Gardening

As the days become short and colder, we start to say goodbye to our spring and summer flowers and begin to welcome in the autumn blooms. Our choice for this week’s plant of the week is the Camellia. The Camellia offers gardeners both experienced and novice a wonder solution to bringing colour into the garden this autumn. Here is why the Camellia has received its spot as the plant of the week.

There are over 250 species of Camellia available, providing a wide range of flower shapes and colours to best suit your tastes.

Easily blends into a garden without overpowering smaller shrubs and plants.

Can easily be used to create a thick hedge or trimmed during spring to create a stylish lollipop tree when there are no flowers that can be damaged.

Grows in partial shade and grows to be about 3.5m tall, although taller plants are not unheard of.

The Camellia flowers range from white to a deep cherry red with bright yellow stamens and release a mild and pleasing fragrance.

The flowers range in size from 7 to 10cm with ruffled petals and a fluted shape.

While the flowers bloom from late summer, through autumn, and into early winter, the leaves of the Camellia remain a deep and glossy green throughout the year.

The Camellia is a hardy shrub that is easy to grow.

It will require regular watering in order to keep the soil slightly moist but not soaking wet.

The Camellia should be pruned and fed in spring with a slow-release fertilizer for the best flowers in autumn.

Reaches full height within three to five years.

The Camellia is a versatile plant offering gardeners a range of options in pruning styles and colour choices. This plant grows relatively quickly and is easily maintained. While not indigenous or particularly water-wise, the Camellia will bring months of enjoyment to gardeners everywhere and maybe that extra something your garden is looking for.
