Douglasdale

Category News

Douglasdale, nestled within the prestigious and affluent Northern Suburbs, is a dynamic area that offers affordable yet well-sized homes and estates. Suitable for just about any need, Douglasdale is particularly favoured by young, up-and-coming couples, and professionals looking for starter homes and complexes.

Although young people enjoy the vibe, Douglasdale still retains interest from older couples seeking out property in the area's more upscale sections. With the convenience of most shopping centres and malls being within a short driving distance and with Johannesburg CBD a mere 30km away, Douglasdale makes for both affluent and convenient living.

Douglasdale at a glance

Originally the area was built upon the old yet massive Douglasdale farm which was founded by Thomas Douglas and his wife Janet Alexander who immigrated from Scotland to South Africa in 1890. The farm was bought as prime real estate alongside the Klein Jukskei River and was thus named Douglasdale Farm.

The original farmhouse is perhaps one of the oldest homes in Sandton and is now over a century old, being built in 1905. The family is best known for their milk deliveries which they would famously make on a horse-drawn cart in the early 1940s.

These days the custom remains alive and well as the dairy produces almost 2% of South Africa's total milk production. The Douglasdale Dairy services most of the Johannesburg region as well as parts of the North West and Mpumalanga.

Douglasdale is located between the suburbs of Fourways, Sandton, and the upmarket area of Bryanston to the South East. Access to the six-lane N1 Freeway from William Nicol off-ramp is a simple five-minute drive from any point in the area.
