Halloween costume ideas for kids
Category News
Halloween is just around the corner and that means two things: it's time to start thinking of some spooky décor for your home and garden; and you'll have to come up with the perfect trick-or-treating costumes for your kids. Finding and agreeing on a costume can end up being quite a lengthy (and costly) task, with so many different costume options out there to choose from.
To help inspire you to get into the Halloween spirit and to hopefully make choosing a costume that your kids actually like slightly easier, we've put together three fun and original DIY Halloween costume ideas:
Raining cats and dogs:
This super cute Halloween costume is guaranteed to be a hit and does not require you to be a professional seamstress or artist extraordinaire. After all, who doesn't like cats and dogs?
What you'll need:
- An umbrella
- Plush toys (cats and dogs)
- String/thread
- Raincoat
- Wellington boots
How:
Cut your string or thread into various length pieces (not too long as you don't want the plush toys to reach the floor) and then tie each piece of string or thread securely to a plush cat and dog. Make sure to secure the string to the plush toys with a double knot as you don't want any of the animals to fall off while trick or treating. Once you've attached a plush toy to each piece of string or thread, tie the other end of the string onto the spokes of the umbrella, ensuring that each animal hangs at a different length. Dress your child up in a raincoat and wellington boots and voila! Its raining cats and dogs!
Flamingo:
This costume offers a serious pop of colour and is absolutely perfect for any child who likes the colour pink.
What you'll need:
- A pink leotard or t-shirt
- Pink tutu
- Pink stockings or leggings
- Pink feather boa
- Pink cap
- Black paint
- White cardboard
- Glue
How:
You can start by painting the peak of the cap black, as this will be the flamingo's beak. You then cut two identical sized circles out of the white cardboard, which will be the flamingo's eyes. Once you've cut out your circles you can paint black dots for pupils in the middle of each one. Glue an eye on either side of the cap to complete your flamingo's head. Once the head has been completed, all that's left now is to dress your child up in head to toe pink and accessorize with a pink feather boa.
Crayon:
This colourful costume is a great last-minute idea and looks cool when worn individually but can be especially fun when done in a group.
What you'll need:
- Colour co-ordinated clothes, eg: yellow leggings, yellow dress and yellow shoes
- Cone shaped party hat in the same colour as your clothes
- Sheet of cardboard in the same colour as your clothes
- String
- Marker
How:
This outfit is super straight-forward, the only real DIY comes in making a sign to hang around your child's neck that says 'crayon'.
With these cute and easy-to-do DIY costume ideas, Halloween this year will be a less of a trick and more of a treat!
