How to Keep Your Garden Hydrated in the December Heat

We’ve all felt it and even the toughest of us can’t deny it, this December is H.O.T. hot! In weather like this, many of us blast the aircon or take a dip in the pool, we feel sorry for our kids and our pets who can’t keep their cool as well as us adults, but when do we consider our gardens? Here are five tricks to help keep your garden hydrated and help your plants survive this summer:

Don’t let your plants wilt to begin with

This is a simple enough task, keep the soil hydrated. Now we don’t mean let your plants go swimming every day, but if the soil is dry 2cm below the top of the soil, it’s time to give the garden a good water. This will help keep your garden hydrated and save you from using water for long periods of time when you do water the garden.

Get yourself an indicator plant

What’s an indicator plant you may be asking, well it’s a plant that you’ll be able to see easily and will wilt a little quicker than the rest. When your indicator plant starts to wilt, it’s time to give your garden a good soaking. My indicator plant is a sweet basil named Lola.

Make use of Mulch

It’s not the most visually appealing thing to have in your garden and even the sound of the word is a little unpleasant, but it works. What mulch does is help to retain the water in the soil by preventing evaporation, this is especially important for vegetables such as tomatoes, speaking of which…

Water your vegetables 2 or 3 times a week

Vegetables need a lot of water to help promote deep root growth and produce the lovely home grown organic vegetables we all love. Tomatoes in particular are fussy little things; they will usually let you know when they need the water.

Know what time to water

Plants are sensitive to the heat, and while giving them a good shower in heat of the day may seem kind, it doesn’t hold the desired effect. The trick is to water your garden either early in the morning or late in the evening so the leaves don’t get sun burnt, like swimming without sunscreen; the water makes the burn worse.
