It's Pizza Night!
Category News
Everyone enjoys a good pizza. Whether you dress it up with toppings or keep it simple, this well-rounded and tasty meal is loved across the world. Homemade pizza is not only a healthier and more economical option for pizza night, but it also helps to bring the family or friends together for a wonderful evening at home. Here are two delicious pizza base recipes you can make from scratch:
Traditional Italian Pizza Crust
Ingredients:
● 1 sachet of active dry yeast
● 1 tsp of brown sugar
● 1 cup of warm water
● 2 ½ cups bread flour
● 2 Tbsp olive oil
● 1 tsp salt
Method:
1. In a medium-sized mixing bowl, dissolve the yeast and sugar in the warm water. Let the mixture stand for about 10 minutes or until the water becomes creamy and starts to bubble.
2. Slowly add in the flour, salt and olive oil. Fold the ingredients into each other until a smooth dough forms and then allow it to rest for 5 minutes.
3. Lightly flour a smooth surface and turn the dough out of the bowl. Knead the dough for 5 to 7 minutes or until it becomes elastic.
4. Lightly oil the mixing bowl and place the dough back in, remember to turn the dough so it becomes lightly oiled all the way around, and cover with either cling wrap or a kitchen towel.
5. Place the dough in a warm and draft-free area to allow it to rise for about 2 hours.
6. Divide the dough into 3 to 4 portions and allow it to rest for a further 20 to 30 minutes. Use either a rolling pin or your hands to roll out the pizza to desired shape and size, add your sauce and toppings and bake in an oven preheated to 250 degrees Celsius for 15 to 20 minutes.
7. Give your pizza a little time to cool before slicing and enjoy!
Gluten-Free Pizza Crust
Ingredients:
● 1 ¼ cups of all purpose gluten free flour (1 ⅔ parts brown rice flour, 1 ⅔ parts potato starch and ⅓ part white rice flour) and 1/4 cup almond flour
● 1 sachet active dry yeast
● 1 tsp baking powder
● 1 Tbsp brown sugar
● ¾ tsp salt
● 1 cups of warm water
● 1 Tbsp psyllium husk powder
● 2 Tbsp of extra virgin olive oil plus a little extra for brushing
Method:
1. In a bowl, pour in the warm water, sugar and yeast and give it a quick whisk to combine. Allow to stand for 3-4 minutes.
2. While the yeast activates, combine flours, baking powder, salt and psyllium husk powder in a medium mixing bowl.
3. Create a well in the dry ingredients and slowly add the yeast mixture while gently stirring with a spatula and mix until a well-combined dough forms. A food processor or standing mixer is recommended.
4. Cover the dough and allow to rest and rise for about 30 minutes.
5. Preheat the oven to 220 degrees Celsius and press the dough into the size and shape of your choosing and allow to rest for a further 10 minutes.
6. Bake for 15-20 minutes and then remove from the oven. Add the sauce, cheese and toppings of your choice and then bake for a further 10-15 minutes.
7. Give your pizza time to cool before slicing and enjoy!
Whether you enjoy the traditional flat style pizza or folded calzone, these pizza base recipes are a must-have in your personal recipe collection. Remember that pizza night is about good food with great people, so have fun!
