Making your own Natural Sunscreen and Aftersun

Category News

Few things can ruin a holiday as quickly as a bad sunburn, but many of the sunblock products on the shelves contain ingredients that should make us look twice. Take some time to learn more about what is in the sunscreen you buy or rather try making either of these two recipes - all natural sunblock with SPF 20 and a natural after-sun cream to soothe any burns.

All Natural Sunblock:

Ingredients
  • 2 Tbsp uncoated, non-nano zinc oxide natural (CANNOT be absorbed through the skin, safe sun protection.)
  • ¼ cup of shea butter
  • ½ cup of unrefined, organic coconut oil
  • 1 large Tbsp of beeswax
  • 10-15 drops of lavender oil

Method:
  1. In a large double boiler (or a glass bowl in shallow, gently simmering water) add the shea butter, coconut oil, and beeswax and gently stir until completely melted and combined.
  2. Use a mask to cover your mouth and nose while slowly stirring in the zinc oxide and essential oils. Ensure all the ingredients are completely combined and remove from heat.
  3. Allow the sunblock to cool completely and add to a sterile mason jar or clean lotion bottle.

Natural After-Sun:

Ingredients:
  • 15 drops of pure lavender essential oil
  • 1 Tbsp cold pressed extra virgin olive oil
  • 2 Tbsp of unrefined, organic coconut oil
  • 1 Tbsp of cocoa butter
  • 3 generous Tbsp of aloe vera gel
Method:
  1. In a large double boiler (or a glass bowl in shallow, gently simmering water) combine coconut oil and cocoa butter until melted and remove from heat.
  2. Stir in the remaining ingredients until thoroughly mixed and a creamy paste begins to form.
  3. Store in a mason jar or clean lotion bottle in the fridge to help it keep longer to provide a cooling sensation when applied to burnt skin.

With these natural recipes, the sun can be enjoyed all summer long without hazardous creams being slathered onto our skin. Remember to apply sunblock at least every hour for the best protection and summer fun.
