Our fathers matter! Here’s WHY…

Category News

Let’s take a moment to acknowledge the role and impact that fathers - and father figures - have in our and our children’s lives, and try make it a little easier for them to do so! In fact, numerous studies have reached the same conclusion: children with active fathers have an advantage, socially and academically.

Children with involved fathers have fewer problems

Dr Maureen Black of the University of Maryland School of Medicine says "We found that fathers who are involved with their children have children with fewer problems. That added involvement from a father helps children tremendously."  Specifically, her research found better language skills and fewer behavioural problems in children with an actively-involved father. In addition, having a positive male role model helps adolescent boys develop positive gender-role characteristics, and teen girls are better able to relate to men positively when fathered by an involved father.

This is true for fathers that don’t live at home

Interestingly, this result holds true even if the father doesn't live in the same home as the child, as in divorce situations which are prevalent in today's society. It appears that how involved the dad is, and not where he lives, is the crucial factor. According to a study at the University of Illinois, children with fathers who take an interest in their lives (for example, asking about what they learned in school and their day-to-day social activities and relationships) do better in school than kids who don't have that kind of input or interest.

It is really important to note that this father figure doesn't have to be a biological father in order for children to benefit: it can be an adoptive father, stepdad, or an adult male in the household. As such, we need to appreciate the input of all these men on Father's Day too!

Celebrating Fathers

It is now accepted and celebrated that a father's presence and involvement can be as crucial to a child's healthy development as is the mother's; and that experiencing validation of their importance in the general parenting literature has made fathers much more conscious of their value and, in turn, leads to their greater desire to be involved.
As such, on this Father’s day it is important to recognise and reward all dads who are present and actively teaching important life skills to children: from braaing and playing rough, to making them feel protected with gruff affection and maybe threatening teenage boyfriends!

It is important to teach our children, and meaningful for dads everywhere to hear, “Thank you, you are fabulous and essential and we appreciate you.” This, after all, is what makes life worth living, our true legacy: ensuring the health, happiness, and well-being of our children, that future generation to-be. Dad’s presence - bad jokes and all - is essential to that!
