🏁Split Decisions - is it make or break? - by Jonathan Broekman

Category Motivation

A race car driver is conditioned to make decisions in a millisecond, and these decisions could put their lives at risk. Travelling at high speeds and knowing when to overtake or to back down. If you have seen the latest Netflix show, GranTurismo, you will understand the intensity of that split-second decision. Make the decision, commit.

Can we apply this thinking to our lives? Should we make a split-second decision about where we live and who we marry? Will overthinking impact our long-term abilities to create successful outcomes?

I have been selling property for 30+ years, and each time a buyer or a seller meets with me, we enter into life-changing discussions:
Should you sell the property now?
Should you buy the property now?
Is it the right time to downscale?
Is this the right price?

Here are my top 10 tips when making BIG decisions:

  1. Avoid emotional decisions!
  2. Calculate, but don't overthink
  3. Know your values and align these with the decision
  4. Be flexible and adaptable
  5. Write a list of pros and cons, and make sure the pros outweigh the cons
  6. Only take advice from  a  neutral third party, not family and friends
  7. Consider the long-term consequences
  8. Trust your instincts
  9. Evaluate your resources, specifically the financial impact, and seek educated advice
  10. Reflect on past experiences

If the race car driver never takes the risk, he will finish in the last position. The most successful people I know will consider all of the above when deciding, but it often comes down to commitment. Take the decision and maintain focus to achieve the desired outcome.
