Decorating Your Home

Category Interior Design

A beautifully accessorised home fills homeowners with pride and guests with admiration. However, decorating your home can be a difficult task. A keen eye for interior design and the impeccable taste of a professional is usually required to get your vision just right. If you’re thinking of trying your hand at decorating your home without the aid of a professional interior designer, which can be expensive, read these eleven tips to get the room just right.

Go With What You Love:
Select an item you love and which brings you joy when you look at it. This will be the rooms statement piece. Whether it’s a specific couch or a coffee table which has been passed down from great-grandparents, going with a statement piece you love will let the room be a pleasant one for you to enjoy everytime you walk in.

Colour Scheme:
Once you have selected your statement piece, it’s time to choose the rooms colour scheme. Choose two or three colours which complement your statement piece and use these as a guide for wall paint and accessories to add interest to the room.

Choose a Theme:
Choose one theme for the room and stick to it. Having multiple themes clashing in the room can cause decor chaos. Some favourite themes seen this year have included Modern Vintage, Boho, Golden-Age Glamour, and Pantone.

Balance and Symmetry:
Ensure that your furniture and accessories are well arranged to create a balanced and symmetrical room to avoid a haphazard appearance.

Group:
Group similar objects together with varying sizes. Whether these are vases or photo frames, grouping them together with different sizes creates visual intrigue.

Lighting:
Lighting will always help set the mood and add to the atmosphere of a room. Choose light fittings which complement the room and are creatively designed.

Use the Floor:
The floor of any room can act as a canvas. Use rugs to create warmth and depth while adding some interesting textures tying the room together.

Add Some Life:
Houseplants and flowers provide a variety of health benefits, from cleaning the air to helping with those suffering from depression, but that’s not the only reason to keep them in your home. Houseplants bring an energetic element, making the room feel alive.

Curtains:
Curtains will set a subtle tone to the room and provide tasteful privacy when drawn. Select the curtains carefully as they can either create drama or calm the room.

Embrace Textures:
Multiple textures add layers of visual interest to any room. Select a variety of accessories and decor pieces with different textiles to make your room feel alive.

Select Art:
Once the room has these important elements to a tastefully crafted room, fill any gaps on the walls or end tables with your favourite pieces or artwork. Just make sure these are in line with your colour scheme and room theme.

Not everyone is cut out to be an interior designer, but with these rules of design, you may not need one to make the room you envisioned a reality.
