With each new generation, a new style of interior design seems to emerge as the kids grow up and leave home. Gen Y, or the Millennials, are the most recent arrivals into the world of endless home interior possibilities. So what have they brought to the table that's new and exciting?
Firstly, we need to ask ourselves, what is a millennial?
The internet tells us: A millennial, also known as Generation Y or Gen Y, is a person born between 1981 and 1996 (Between the ages of 22 to 37 years old).
So what is their approach to interiors and design?
Millennials love a home where there is very little clutter and prefer to go for a much more minimal approach to design. Less is more they say! They prefer to rather put more emphasis into rooms like the lounge or kitchen where they spend more time. For them, their homes have become an extension of their personalities showcasing their individualism more so than previous generations have sought to.
I was speaking to a Millennial while writing this, and it really interested me in what she had to say. She told me "The home entertainment set-up is dead, especially the TV. We're more likely to watch our series on our laptops because they're mobile. Colourful kitchen utensils, cabinets and appliances are king and the overall style takes after what we're interested in. At my house, we have a nerd-culture haven."
Things need to not only look nice but be functional, but more importantly, show who they are.
