Kitchen Improvements on a Budget!

Category Home Tips And Tricks

The kitchen is the heart of the home - it’s where everything happens, and the family comes together to share meals and stories and laughs. It is usually the first stop for anyone coming into your house as well as what may make or break selling your house in the future.  So why not spruce yours up this new year? It doesn’t need to cost an arm and a leg, and as they say… a change is as good as a feast!

1.

CLEAR YOUR SPACE
Start off by cleaning up the kitchen, literally and spaciously. First give it a good scrub from top to bottom - move the fridge, behind the oven, clear all surfaces and get in there! Then consider where you can add more space. Add some shelves higher up, slot organising drawer dividers in, and treat utensils as art by storing them in stainless steel or brightly coloured containers, depending on the theme of your kitchen. This decluttering of counter space is a fantastic start.
Hint - why not add some hooks and hang your pots and pans under a cupboard or up on a wall? It not only creates space but adds to the decoration!

2.

LIGHT IT UP
Either change or add a light fitting to brighten the atmosphere and tie the space together. A funky addition of some string lights above a shelf or under a kitchen counter top add another dimension to the room.
Hint - remember to replace globes with warm white and energy efficient ones!

3.

SPLASH SOME PAINT
You don’t need to necessarily add colour, although some red or blue can add a pulse when applied to a back wall or the kitchen island. If you don’t want to go so bold, just sand down and repaint the cupboard doors - they are melamine, just save on the sanding! Add some new handles, and it will look like new. If you are creative, why not add a stencil to an open wall? If you aren’t, you can buy a premade sticker.
Hint - if you want to replace cupboards, consider sourcing them at kitchen demolition places for a fraction of the price!

4.

FIX YOUR HANG-UPS
Take your curtains or blinds down for a clean, or consider replacing them, again with a mind to tie the kitchen together by coordinating either a painted cupboard, the handles, light fixtures, or set of containers.
Hint - if you are hanging curtains why not add a small rug of the same fabric?

5.

IT’S THE SMALL THINGS…
The little touches add a huge energy to the room, and they don’t necessarily require constant maintenance. For example, keep a plant in the kitchen instead of constantly replacing fresh-cut flowers. Line the inside of drawers or cabinets with wallpaper, add a window box of herbs, or even just replace the grotty dishtowels and drying rack for an updated version.
Hint - paint the fridge with blackboard paint and throw the whiteboard out! Kids are guaranteed to see messages you leave here for them as they go to get breakfast ready.

These little touches are inexpensive, but can subtly and dramatically change the face of not only the kitchen but your entire home, giving you the psychological spirit to tackle the year ahead.
