Your Moving Checklist

Category Home Buying/Selling Tips

Moving houses is a stressful time and when you have a million things on your plate, it can be easy to forget something important. Planning is essential, so we have had looked at the most important things to remember when you move house and have created a moving checklist.

Sort Everything:
When you move into a new home, you have the perfect opportunity to sort through everything you own. This is when you decide what to keep, what to donate and what to throw away. Get the whole family involved and work systematically through each room to decide what you will be bringing to the new home and what will be donated and thrown out.

Get Quotes:
Research and get references for various movers. While moving everything yourself is an option, its option easier and less stressful to hire a moving company for a day and get it done for you. Get quotes from different moving companies and find the one that will work best for you.

Get your Moving Supplies:
There is nothing worse than when you reach day zero and you need to run out to find boxes, tape and bubble wrap. Make sure that you have enough of each of these items about a month before the big day to minimize stress and prevent rushing.

Start Packing Before Time:
Spend a few hours each day packing the thing you won’t immediately need or that you don’t use often such as specialized kitchen appliances, winter clothes if its summer, and books that you aren’t reading. Remember to label each box with its contents and the room it will be going into so that everything is well organized.

Label your Boxes:
Write clearly on your boxes. For example Kitchen: dinner plates. Keep a box for the things you will need on the first night in your new home.

One Week Before D-Day:
Those last few things you need to do a week before the moving day is to request the day off work to supervise the move, this will allow you to keep a watchful eye on the entire process. Confirm your arrangements with the moving company to ensure they will be there on the day. Finally, start emptying out your freezer, defrost and enjoy all the frozen food for dinners and lunches to ensure none of the food spoils while being transported.

With this simple checklist, you won’t need to worry too much about moving houses. Remember to take things one task at a time and everything will be just fine. Moving can be an exciting and wonderful experience so long as the beforehand planning and all items on your checklist have been accounted for.
